Lael Neale – Some Bright Morning

Lael Neale switched gears on “Some Bright Morning,” trading her usual chiming psychedelia for straight-up rock and roll. The Los Angeles musician’s new single sounds like the Grateful Dead covering Buddy Holly, which is precisely the kind of left turn that makes perfect sense when you hear it.

This outtake from her acclaimed album “Altogether Stranger” pairs Neale’s signature Omnichord with Guy Blakeslee’s driving guitar and backwards solos. A blown-out vintage drum machine powers everything forward, while Neale’s vocals stay radiant throughout.

Lyrically, Neale pokes fun at consumer culture’s endless self-help promises. Her protagonist drives through civilization, filling up gas tanks as world events get stranger, searching for meaning in an increasingly polarized world. It’s sharp social commentary delivered with a knowing wink.

The video shows Neale doing farm work alongside her father. She draws parallels between farming and artmaking—both require tending to work that’s never finished, motivated by belief without attachment to results.
